Closing of the Missoula, Montana Terminal

Closing of the Missoula, Montana Terminal
January 14, 2025

Re:  Closing of the Missoula, Montana Terminal

Dear Team,

After a thorough review of our operations and freight network, we have made the decision to close our terminal in Missoula, Montana effective January 14th. This decision was not made lightly, but it is necessary due to the changing freight network patterns and the associated costs of operating a full terminal that is not being utilized sufficiently.

We have some fantastic team members who have made significant contributions to our company at this location. We hope to work with all of them to explore relocation options so that they can continue to be valued members of our team.

Missoula’s terminal location has become more and more evident to be out of efficient route for much of our network now that it is growing in other areas, resulting in increased costs and inefficiencies when we route trucks through there to utilize the terminal. Additionally, our freight network no longer supports the level of activity required to sustain maintenance and operations at this terminal.

As our business continues to grow, our focus will shift more towards core regions. This strategy aims to enhance density in our well-established areas. However, we will continue to require drivers residing in the Montana area, but we no longer consider it a strategic advantage for having a terminal in Missoula along with the associated overhead costs. Closing this location aligns with our strategic goals, laying the foundation for the company’s future success.

Our analysis of this terminal clearly indicated that it is the right business decision to end our presence there. A lower volume of work orders compared to other locations, coupled with the unnecessary costs incurred in routing through it to handle work orders that weren’t essential in most cases, resulted in costs that don’t justify its benefit to our company.

Although this location no longer offers sufficient value to warrant a terminal, expansion in other regions may prompt new investments in areas that do provide clear benefit to our network.

We understand that this change might be inconvenient for a small group of Drivers, but we want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to make this transition as smooth as possible. We will reach out to you soon to assist in navigating any changes or concerns you may have.

As we proceed with this transition, we are committed to supporting everyone through this change.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we work together to execute the evolving strategy of growing our business even better for the future.

Decker Professional Drivers,

With our new health plan starting 1-01-25, we’ve received some questions.  The attached information should help to answer these questions.  And the information below explains how to download the Aplos app and register, allowing you to search for providers among many other things.  Keep in mind, Aplos is an open network, and every doctor is eligible to deliver services to you and your dependents If you run into a provider who says they won’t accept the insurance, call Aplos immediately, even from your doctor’s office, as they should be able to get the matter resolved before you leave so you can be seen.  The Aplos number is:  866-420-8575; this is also on your card and in the app.

Please, click on the links for information on Klinic Aplos Behavioral Health Virtual Care and Aplos Exemplar Care Virtual Care, both of which are available to you at a $0 co-pay. Participants who don’t live in Iowa will need to check Iowa as their state of residence for now but this issue will be resolved in the near future. Once you download the app the main page shows the number for Aplos assistance, the link for a Virtual Care appointment, and the number for the Klinic Behavioral Health Virtual Care (see images below).

RE:         EMBRACING THE NEW YEAR

Dear Team,

As we embark on a fresh year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on our current standing and our future trajectory. 2025 holds significant importance for us, not only as an opportunity to capitalize on our achievements in 2024 amidst challenging market conditions in the transportation industry, but also as a year to seize the opportunities that lie ahead.

As I mentioned in my letter a few weeks ago, 2024 was a year marked by substantial progress in our initiatives. These initiatives were not solely aimed at mitigating the impact of the freight downturn, but rather at positioning the company for long-term success, as we anticipate a rebound in 2025 and being able to best capitalize on it.

As we intentionally reduced our fleet size in 2024 to align with the declining freight volumes, we seized the opportunity to devise a strategic plan that would enable us to navigate the slow down while preparing for the anticipated resurgence in a manner that we would grow back in a better way than before. Growing our freight network by analyzing opportunities and pricing them accordingly to build a more robust and high-quality freight network. Simultaneously, we’ll focus our hiring efforts more closely aligned with our network, ensuring a complementary relationship that minimizes deadhead and reduces poor revenue movements.

While 2024 was a year to stabilize in a challenging market, we used that time to plan our growth with a stronger foundation in several ways. Some of these changes are already evident, while others are yet to come. Our focus is on in-depth budgetary planning, accountability and performance, new business development, and aligned growth.

As we embark on 2025, we feel optimistic that we have entered a recovery market. The encouraging signs we’ve observed through December, coupled with the numerous new business awards we’ve received, indicate that this is the beginning of an upward trend. In addition to the initiatives, we’ve implemented with Driver Leaders to enhance driver support and Customer Service to optimize freight picking and planning, these efforts are demonstrating substantial improvements in our operational efficiency.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue our planning efforts for this year. I’ll share our overall goals and objectives for this year and some initiatives on how we plan to achieve them this year, hoping it clarifies our direction and the steps we’ll take to get there.

Although the trucking economy has been challenging for some time, I feel more optimistic than ever that we are truly addressing the fundamental aspects necessary for our company’s long-term success and growth. We are tackling many long-standing issues like never before and are also developing a strategy to establish a solid foundation that will not only serve us well in the short term but also pave the way for sustained and substantial growth in the future.
